A Little Night Music contains adult themes which may not be suitable for all audiences.

Stephen Sondheim’s career began and ended with adaptation.

His first mainstream lyrical project (West Side Story) was an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. Here We Are, the last musical he wrote before his death in 2021, adapted two films by Luis Bruñel: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel. Of the 20 major works Sondheim had a hand in during his lifetime, 10 of them, including A Little Night Music, are adaptations.

The story being retold is Smiles of a Summer Night, a 1955 film by Ingmar Bergman (most well-known for macabre thriller The Seventh Seal.) Smiles sees its cast of lovers fumble their way through the Swedish Midsummer, a holiday celebrating the summer solstice and the promise of a bright year still to come. A Little Night Music introduces the spectre of time and the uncertainty of the future to the tale—an adaptational choice which at first may seem counterproductive. Why add extra weight to a lighthearted romantic comedy? Because Sondheim always trusted us to carry it.

Night Music also sees the addition of some characters that don’t appear in the film. These characters—the number 3, the summer night, the clowns—are present alongside our lovers as the story unfolds, and have just as much influence as any of the bodies onstage. The catch is, they don’t appear in a corporeal sense. It is up to us, the audience, to pick them out of each scene.

This summer, mere weeks before the solstice that sets our lovers in motion, we ask you to take part in the dance that is Night Music. Carry the weight, celebrate what lies ahead, and keep an eye open for the invisible figures. They are very grateful you’ve joined us here today. One of them could even be your perfect waltz partner.
