DIRECTORS NOTE

Thank you for being here—and thank you for welcoming us into this community as we begin our first official season here in Dedham!

As Artistic Director of Sullivan Rep, I’ve been thinking a great deal about our season theme: “Crossroads and Watersheds.” It’s a theme that feels incredibly personal right now. Our company may not be new to creating theater, but we are new members of this vibrant artistic community. This moment—sharing our first production as residents of Mother Brook Arts and Community Center with all of you—is a watershed moment for us. A step towards what we hope will be a growing, lasting partnership.

For me, BANDSTAND felt like a fitting beginning to that journey. Set in 1945, at the end of a world-changing war, the musical follows veterans who return home only to discover that moving forward isn’t as simple as stepping off a train. Their crossroads are internal, invisible, and deeply human. Donny and the members of the Donny Nova Band choose to confront their experiences and trauma not by burying it, but by transforming it—through music, friendship, honesty, and the bravery it takes to create something new out of pain. Their story is one of healing, resilience, and community, as well as a reminder that these crossroads are more common among us than we may at first realize. They happen when we find people who see us, support us, challenge us, and remind us that hope is still possible.

Our season continues to explore these transformative moments in very different ways. Merrily We Roll Along looks at the crossroad moments that shape a lifetime—moments when ambition, friendship, and dreams collide, and choices reverberate back and forth through time. Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None confronts a darker kind of watershed moment, when past actions catch up to us and the truth becomes inescapable. And in A Christmas Carol, we celebrate one of the most iconic transformations in literature, as Scrooge discovers that it is never too late for generosity, empathy, and renewal. Together, these stories create a season-long conversation about the moments that change us, the choices made in those moments, and the directions they then send us in.

As we settle into the beautiful community here at Mother Brook and begin building on these new relationships, we do so with excitement, gratitude, and a deep commitment to earning our place in this community. This season marks a watershed moment for us, too: a chance to listen, to learn, and to create meaningful, resonant work with and for the audiences around us.

Thank you for sharing the beginning of this chapter with us. We’re honored to be here with you and we can’t wait to share where this journey leads next.
